A Muddled, Broken Faith...

All faith is a risk, my friend. Mine is Marred, Muddled and Broken, but--Thank God--ever certain.
[Discussing a new prisoner who has to spend the night in the box] Dragline: He ain’t in the box because of the joke played on him. He back-sassed a free man. They got their rules. We ain’t got nothin’ to do with that. Would probably have happened to him sooner or later anyway, a complainer like him. He gotta learn the rules the same as anybody else. Luke: Yeah, them poor old bosses need all the help they can get.

All those rules. Even the ones who make the rules gotta follow rules themselves. They just don’t get the rules they gotta follow, too busy themselves making rules for other fellas. It’s a failure to communicate on their part. They think others ain’t listenin’ to them, when they themselves be the deaf ones.

The Divine Office of the Catholic Church

In speaking of ‘non-Christians,’ Ratzinger is careful to distinguish between the followers of the great non-Christian religions, on the one hand, and, on the other, what he terms the ‘new pagans’ in the traditional heartlands of Christendom itself. […] Many people, including practicing Catholics, no longer regard the Church as the unique divinely established means of salvation. They question her ‘absoluteness’ and so the gravity of her missionary duty. And indeed one might well ask if all men and women of good will can be saved sola moralitate, why is salvation so simple for them and so complex and difficult for us? Faith come, in this way, to be experienced as a burden and not a grace.

AIDAN NICHOLS, OP

The Thought of Pope Benedict XVI

Man’s promethean attempts to break out of his limitations himself, to build with his own capacities the tower by which he may mount up to divinity, always necessarily end in collapse and disappointment—indeed, in despair. This blending, this union, has become possible becasue God came down in Christ, took upon himself the limitations of human existence, suffering them to the end, and in the infinite love of the Crucified One opened up the door to infinity. The real end of creation, its underlying purpose—and conversely that of human existence as willed by the Creator—is this very union, ‘that God may be all in all.’

Pope BENEDICT XVI, pp., Pilgrim Fellowship of Faith

It is necessary to keep one’s compass in one’s eyes and not in the hand, for the hands execute, but the eye judges.

MICHELANGELO

A thing may happen and be a total lie; another thing may not happen and be truer than the truth.
